What is the difference between CBD and CBN?
It can be hard to keep track of all the buzzwords and acronyms surrounding cannabis and hemp byproducts, so we’re here to help categorize and explain two of the most commonly used: CBD and CBN. Despite their similar names, CBD and CBN are different molecules. Because they are two different molecules they behave differently. For example, CBD has appetite-suppressing effects while CBN appears to stimulate the appetite. This may make CBN a great therapeutic option to help increase appetite in those who have a diminished appetite because of another illness, such as cancer, AIDS, or chemotherapy.

What is CBD?
CBD, or Cannabidiol, is a phytocannabinoid found in hemp plants. It is one of the most well known and well-researched cannabinoids, and it is used in a wide range of consumer products, from lotions and hand creams, to tinctures, to ingestible gummies. CBD naturally boosts our bodies’ ability to produce endocannabinoids, and studies have shown that it may contain anti-inflammatory properties and produce an overall sense of calming in humans and even your pet.
What is CBN and the benefits?
Compared to CBD, there have been a relatively low number of scholarly studies conducted on the effects of CBN in the human body. CBN stands for Cannabinol, a compound which is gathered from aging THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol). What we do know is that despite the fact CBN is derived from THC, it is actually non- intoxicating. CBN has also been found to produce anti-inflammatory and anti-convulsant properties in humans.
CBN can also be used effectively as a sleep aid or mild sedative. This cannabinoid has also been shown to help regulate the immune system and works to relieve the pain and inflammation caused by several conditions, including arthritis and Crohn's disease.
CBN is mildly psychoactive, but does not produce a euphoric high like THC.
Currently, there are no known side effects of CBN.
The Science of Cannabinoids
CBD and CBN are found in high concentrations inside the leaves and buds of the cannabis plant, in structures called trichomes. These structures change in color depending on the type of cannabinoid resin they contain, becoming cloudy when THC content is highest, and gradually shifting to an amber tone as the THC degrades into CBN.
Cannabinoids function within the plant to protect them from disease and predators while encouraging pollination. In humans, these compounds interact with the endogenous cannabinoid system, a series of receptors that can influence function throughout the central and peripheral nervous systems. We’re still learning about all the potential benefits of these amazing compounds and how they can support our overall wellness. But let’s dive a little deeper into the properties that make each of these compounds unique.
The Entourage Effect
Now that we know what CBD and CBN do on their own, let’s talk about what they can do together. Researchers have put forth a theory called the “entourage effect,” which suggests that, when combined, the properties of two or more different cannabinoids can be amplified or altered; there is only early evidence to suggest this. This means that differing combinations of these cannabinoids can produce products with very specific beneficial effects, like using THC and CBN together to induce sleepiness, while adding CBD to nullify the intoxicating effects of THC.
Bios Organics Philosophy
The entourage effect drives our cannabinoid philosophy here at Bios Organics. That’s why our products feature a wide variety of minor cannabinoids that complement the all-star ingredient, CBD. Rather than a CBD isolate, our products contain a broad spectrum hemp extract, sourced from family hemp farms in Oregon. These farms use earth-friendly cultivation practices and use zero synthetic fertilizers or pesticides on their hemp plants. Once cultivated, we use a process called CO2 supercritical fractionation to isolate and remove unwanted compounds like TCH, waxes, chlorophyll, and pollutants, leaving us with a pure extract with the most beneficial mix of cannabinoids.
By now you probably realize that it’s not really CBD vs CBN. Both cannabinoids play for the same team when combined in our Bios Organics products. So whether you purchase a CBD topical, daily capsule, beverage elixir, or bath gem, know that you’re receiving a product that has been consciously formulated with the highest quality ingredients to let you relax, unwind, and bring yourself back to center.
